When did Fiat buy Alfa Romeo?

I’ve always been a fan of Alfa Romeo designs, so I didn’t want to believe it when someone told me they’re owned by Fiat. Is this true? When did Fiat buy Alfa Romeo?

At first glance, there seems to be little shared between
Alfa Romeo’s
luxury sports line-up and
Fiat’s
fleet of compact cars. In actuality, however, the Alfa Romeo brand is a subsidiary of the Fiat Chrysler Auto Group—and has been since 2007.
Fiat’s acquisition of the world-renowned Italian brand came just three years before Alfa Romeo’s 100th anniversary. Founded in early twentieth-century Milano, Italy, the Alfa Romeo company (first called simply “A.L.F.A”) originally manufactured munitions meant for the Italian and Allied war fronts. Still, it later turned to mass vehicle production in the 1930s.
Sports and luxury vehicles were an early staple of the brand—and classics like the 6C and the ultra-sleek
Giulia Quadrifoglio
have been featured in movies and media around the world.
But by the late ‘70s, the Alfa Romeo company had lost profitability, and in the ‘80s a number of buyers (including
Ford
) sought to purchase the company. Fiat’s promise to employ Italian workers won then-president Ettore Massacesi to their side—since then, Alfa Romeo has seen a series of restructuring under Fiat leadership that led to its subsidiary status in 2007.
