Cheapest car insurance companies in Kentucky

We conducted one of the most extensive nationwide insurance shopping surveys ever, asking policyholders to share their experiences and opinions about their insurance carriers.
Our survey of more than 15,000 policyholders revealed that while
State Farm
,
Progressive
, and Kentucky Farm Bureau may have the largest market share in Kentucky, they aren’t necessarily the best car insurance companies for every driver.
In fact, three companies rose above the rest in our survey respondents’ ratings: Clearcover, MAPFRE, and Dairyland. These smaller insurers offer competitive rates and highly-rated customer service that can edge out big-name insurers like
GEICO
and Allstate for many drivers.

How'd we get these scores?

Jerry's experts conducted one of the largest car insurance surveys in the United States. We surveyed 15,000 policyholders, in all 50 states, over the span of 18 months. These policyholders hold insurance policies with 87 different insurance companies. We surveyed policyholders to gauge their satisfaction with their insurance carriers in: policy cost, customer service, buying and renewal experience, as well as claim experience. These scores were all reported by real customers of the insurance companies.
If you're ready to expedite your insurance hunt and streamline your options, then it’s time to sign up for Jerry. Downloading the app, creating a driver profile, and comparing your personalized batch of
free car insurance quotes
takes less than a minute. Whether you're on the busy streets of Louisville or cruising the peaceful roads of rural Kentucky, know that your ideal insurance coverage level is only a few clicks away.

Minimum car insurance requirements for liability and full coverage in Kentucky

Kentucky car insurance law
mandates drivers to maintain minimum liability insurance along with basic
personal injury protection (PIP)
coverage. Failure to obtain and maintain insurance on a vehicle can result in registration revocation, a fine of up to $1,000, and up to 90 days in jail.
It’s important to follow state insurance laws to financially protect yourself and others in case of an accident.

Cheapest minimum liability coverage in Kentucky

There are two types of basic minimum liability insurance coverage in Kentucky. The first type of required insurance is
liability car insurance
, which is referred to as 25/50/10 coverage, breaks down as follows:
Alternatively, the second type of minimum liability coverage auto owners may opt for is a single policy limit of $60,000.
In addition to liability coverage, all car insurance policies in Kentucky automatically come with $10,000 of basic PIP benefits. In exchange for these benefits, drivers agree to limitations on their right to sue other drivers for bodily injury under $1,000. But because Kentucky is a so-called “choice no-fault state,” it’s possible to reject the PIP coverage—and the limitations on your right to sue—in writing using the
Kentucky No-Fault Rejection Form
.
No matter what choice you make, Jerry can help you find a policy with the minimum requirements for the lowest rate available.

Do you need more than the minimum liability insurance coverage in Kentucky?

Yes. While $25,000 or $50,000 of liability insurance might sound like a lot, consider the costs that could stem from a car accident:
  • The average hospital stay following a car accident costs around $60,000
  • The average vehicle on the road today is worth $48,0000
If you’re at fault in an accident and only carry Kentucky’s minimum liability coverage, you may be seriously underinsured—and the other driver can sue you for the remainder (even if they haven’t waived their PIP coverage). What’s more,
Kentucky’s car accident laws
permit drivers to file personal injury lawsuits up to two years after an accident.
Bottom line: Take a closer look at your car insurance policy and reflect on the potential risks. For the best financial protection, consider upping your coverage limits beyond the state minimums.
Lower my car insurance too!

Cheapest full coverage Kentucky auto insurance quotes

A standard
full coverage car insurance policy
includes liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage.
Collision coverage
insures your vehicle in the event of a collision, regardless of fault. If your car is damaged in an accident, collision coverage helps cover repair or replacement costs up to the vehicle's actual cash value.
Comprehensive coverage
covers damage to your vehicle not caused by a collision. It typically includes theft, vandalism, fire, natural disasters, falling objects, and certain types of animal-related damage.
While a full coverage policy tends to come with higher annual premiums, most drivers find that the peace of mind is well worth it. And if your car is financed or leased, your lender will require it. Jerry can assist you in purchasing a foul coverage plan that also aligns with your financial goals.

Kentucky car insurance: Additional coverages

Think of your insurance policy as a bluegrass band—each instrument adds its own unique flavor to the melody. Here are some additional coverages that can add extra layers to your insurance jam:
  • Rental reimbursement coverage
: Your car is off the road for covered repairs, but the show must go on! This coverage will pay for the cost of a rental car to keep your daily gig running smoothly.
  • Towing and labor coverage
: Sometimes your car misses a beat. For those unexpected breakdowns, towing and labor coverage is your ever-reliable roadie ready to assist.
  • Non-owner car insurance
: Perfect for regular users of car-sharing services or folks needing temporary coverage, this coverage chimes in to provide liability protection when driving a borrowed or rented vehicle.
  • Gap insurance
: If your car is declared a total loss, there may be a “gap” between your car’s
    actual cash value
and the remaining amount on your loan. This coverage steps in to reconcile the difference and retain your financial harmony.
  • Mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI)
: Just like Earl Scruggs, cars have their share of breakdowns. This insurance helps cover the costs of unexpected repairs or replacements that aren’t related to an accident—which is why it’s best suited to new and high-value vehicles.

Car insurance premium by rating factors

Your car insurance premium isn't just pulled out of a hat. Insurers employ a multifaceted approach, using
several key aspects of your profile
to shape your annual rates. Here's a glimpse behind the curtain:
  • Your road resumé: Insurance companies take a keen interest in your driving past, considering incidents such as accidents, traffic violations, and any previous claims you've made. Better road behavior translates to better rates.
  • Your experience: Age matters, at least in the world of driving. Younger and less-seasoned drivers tend to endure higher insurance rates because they're statistically more likely to be involved in accidents.
  • Your car: Your vehicle's make, model, and age aren't just conversation starters—they also factor into your insurance premiums. If your car is newer or considered luxury, brace yourself for steep insurance costs.

How Do Different Factors Impact Your Car Insurance Costs in Kentucky?

icon
Allowed (with applicable limitations): Gender, age, driving experience, credit history, education, occupation, employment status, marital status, zip code, insurance history
icon
Prohibited (or effectively prohibited): Colorado currently does not disallow any common insurance rating factors when calculating insurance premiums.

Kentucky SR-22 insurance

For certain driving offenses such as a DUI, driving without insurance, or racking up multiple traffic violations, many states require filing for SR-22 insurance. Kentucky, however, is one of a few states that don’t specifically require drivers to file an
SR-22 insurance certificate
. Still, you must prove that you meet the minimum state insurance requirements to drive.
Once you’re legally allowed to drive again, you’re not totally off the hook—you can expect your insurance costs to nearly double. After spending some quality time with Jerry shopping the insurance marketplace, however, you will find more affordable options with different insurers. Some even specialize in catering to high-risk drivers!

How to find cheap car insurance in Kentucky after an at-fault accident

Each insurance company has a different way of evaluating risk, making the quest for cheap auto insurance rates somewhat tricky if you have a history of accidents.
Enhance your chances of lowering your insurance rates following an at-fault accident by shopping for the best quotes from multiple insurance companies. Don't settle for the first quote that lands in your inbox. FAQ

Yes—but there’s a catch. Kentucky is actually one of three “choice no-fault states” when it comes to making insurance claims. Under this system, no-fault PIP insurance is automatically included in every car insurance policy, but drivers can choose to reject it in writing.
If a driver chooses the no-fault system, they’ll generally seek compensation from their own insurance company first, regardless of who caused the accident, and they’ll give up their right to sue for injuries under $1,000. Drivers, however, have the choice to purchase a traditional tort liability policy instead. This option allows drivers to pursue legal action against the at-fault party for additional compensation beyond what their own coverage offers.

Traffic violations don't necessarily equate to sky-high car insurance rates. Even if your driving record has seen better days, you can still land affordable car insurance rates. How to find cheap auto insurance in Kentucky for your age

As with young drivers everywhere, those in Kentucky often grapple with higher insurance rates due to their minimal on-road experience. By age 25, however, drivers generally have gathered enough experience to lower their accident risk, leading to a drop in their insurance costs. These rates often remain stable until around age 75, when they may start to climb again.
If you find yourself outside the "prime" age bracket, fear not. You can still find the best rate regardless of your age group!

The best car insurance companies in Kentucky for young drivers

In Kentucky, a lack of experience or credit history doesn't necessarily block the road to affordable car insurance. Many insurance companies offer enticing discount programs tailored to young drivers who are just starting their driving journey.
Teen drivers
between the ages of 16 and 19 are at a higher risk of car accidents, which is why they typically face steeper insurance premiums. These young drivers, not yet old enough to sign a car insurance contract, need to be added to an existing policy—sometimes to the chagrin of their parents.
But parents needn’t worry! Numerous young drivers and their guardians have leveraged Jerry’s help to find the most affordable car insurance rates. And if you’re feeling extra shaky, considering full coverage at this stage can be a wise choice to cover all your bases.

The best car insurance companies for senior drivers in Kentucky

Age can bring about unique driving challenges due to decreased physical abilities or cognitive decline. As a result, insurance companies sometimes levy higher rates on seniors.
Several companies in Kentucky nevertheless aim to provide superior coverage for this particular demographic. Institutions like AARP are dedicated to offering some of the
best car insurance options to seniors
. And no matter your plan, many companies are happy to extend discounts for a good driving record no matter your age.

How to find car insurance discounts in Kentucky for your motor vehicle

In Kentucky, your choice of vehicle can have a substantial impact on your car insurance premiums. Your car's repair and replacement costs, its appeal to thieves, and its safety record all contribute to your insurance costs.
In Kentucky, many drivers favor these five vehicle models, which tend to secure favorable insurance rates:
To enjoy the cheapest auto insurance coverage in Kentucky, consider vehicles known for their low repair costs, robust security systems, and proven safety records. Insurance companies prize these qualities because they can shrink expensive repair bills, discourage theft, and lower the chances of severe injury claims.

Is it cheaper to insure a new car or a used car?

Generally, it's more expensive to insure newer cars than older ones. The higher replacement cost in the event of an accident and the allure of newer models for thieves contribute to this. Newer models also tend to come with the latest and greatest in technology and features, which can be more costly to repair or replace.
Alternatively, used cars typically have a lower overall value, leading to cheaper insurance premiums as the potential loss to the insurance company is less.

How to find cheap car insurance in Kentucky in your city

Your exact location in the state of Kentucky can influence your car insurance rates significantly. Residents of bustling cities like
Louisville
or
Lexington
are more likely to pay high premiums than quieter towns like
Bardstown
and
Somerset
.
Differences in insurance costs extend beyond city boundaries. Calculating your exact rate is very complicated—factors like population density, accident rates, crime statistics, and weather patterns in each ZIP code can all impact what you pay to cover your car.
Fortunately, you don’t need to be a data whiz to estimate your ideal coverage costs. With Jerry’s help, you can confidently enroll in the best plan while keeping your budget intact.

How to lower the cost of car insurance in Kentucky

If the search for cheap car insurance has left you sputtering, don’t call it quits just yet. The Jerry app is here to help you push through to the finish line. Check out some of the top tips curated by company experts:
  1. Shop savvy: Car insurance rates are as varied as Kentucky's landscape. Let Jerry be your guide, helping you compare quotes from various companies with ease.
  2. Bundle wisely: If you have multiple insurance needs (like homeowners, renters, or life insurance), combining these with one provider can lead to significant savings.
  3. Drive well: A clean driving record goes a long way. Good drivers can save on car insurance costs by avoiding accidents and traffic violations.
  4. Drive smart: Completing a certified defensive driving course can not only make you a safe driver— it can also result in insurance discounts.
  5. Drive safely: Vehicles equipped with safety features such as anti-lock brakes, airbags, anti-theft devices, and dash cams often qualify for discounts.
  6. Adjust accordingly: Review your coverage every six to 12 months to ensure it still suits your needs and budget. Simply updating your driver profile could lead to a policy that affords you much better rates, discounts, and other financial perks.

Why is car insurance so expensive in Kentucky?

The cost of car insurance in Kentucky might seem expensive, especially as inflation is on the rise around the world. Aside from the increasing price of goods and services across industries worldwide, several other factors can contribute to steep insurance rates in Kentucky, including:
  • High population density
  • Significant numbers of uninsured drivers
  • Frequent occurrences of natural disasters and extreme weather events
  • Car theft rates and crime

FAQs

Every driver's needs are unique. The best way to find budget-friendly car insurance in Kentucky is to compare quotes from multiple carriers, and Jerry makes this process seamless and easy.
Yes. Kentucky law requires drivers to carry at least $25,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person, $50,000 per accident, and $10,000 in property damage liability coverage. The state also requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage.
In Kentucky,
insurance typically follows the car,
not the driver. So if someone borrows your vehicle and causes an accident, your insurance policy will be the one to respond.
Not forever. According to Kentucky statute KRS 186.020, a person who brings a motor vehicle into the Commonwealth of Kentucky shall apply for registration within 15 days in the county where the person resides. Furthermore, if your registration is active, you must maintain insurance on that vehicle.

Exceptions usually apply to college students and military members that are stationed out of state. If you’re a military member, a
USAA insurance policy
could offer specific benefits.
Yes, personal injury protection (PIP) is mandatory for all motor vehicles (except motorcycles) in Kentucky—but you can waive the coverage by filing a rejection form with the state Department of Insurance.
Yes, you can technically have both PIP and MedPay in Kentucky. However, since PIP covers both medical bills and lost wages after a car accident, it's typically seen as the more comprehensive option for auto insurance.
Additionally, while PIP coverage is mandated for car insurance in the state, MedPay is more commonly used in homeowners and premise liability insurance policies in Kentucky.
The annual average expense for a comprehensive car insurance policy in Kentucky amounts to $3,805, equivalent to a monthly cost of $317. On the other hand, the average price for a policy with minimum coverage is approximately $2,390 per year, or $199 per month.

Methodology

The Insurance Research Team analyzes insurance products and services to drive insights and help consumers make informed purchase decisions.
Insurance research: We analyzed over 25 million car insurance quotes; conducted the largest insurance shopping survey (over 15,000 customers surveyed and 85 carriers reviewed in the past 18 months).
We surveyed insurance policyholders for their experience with their insurers in the following areas: (1) insurance cost (2) customer service (3) insurance buying experience (4) insurance renewal experience (5) claim experience. In addition, we asked people what they like about their insurers and what areas in which their insurers could improve. The driver characteristics used in calculating average rates for auto insurance include: single driver, single car, currently insured, clean driving record.
