How long can you go past your oil change?
I was due for an oil change 900 miles ago but I’m not getting one until next week. I have to drive out of state tomorrow and I’m worried about ruining my car. Do you know how long I can go past an oil change?

A trip out of state sounds fun! But driving past your oil change due date can definitely cause unwanted stress and worry, and even damage to your engine.
Advances in engine technology over the years have made it possible for you to go 5,000 to 7,500 miles before needing an oil change. If your car uses synthetic oil, you can go for even longer between oil changes: 10,000 to 15,000 miles.
Something to keep in mind: the numbers above are general guidelines and won’t apply to every make and model, especially older models. Check your
owner’s manual
to see when you should change your oil and follow accordingly.Not sure if you need an oil change? Here are some warning signs to look out for:
- Change in oil color and consistency
- Smell of burning oil
- Engine emitting knocking noises
- Dashboard warning light comes on
If you notice any of these, you should probably postpone your out-of-state trip—or try to make an appointment somewhere else to get your oil changed before you go.
