Looking for car insurance in New York? Here you’ll find all the information you need on driving a car in The Empire State, regardless of what kind of car you own, what your budget is, or what kind of driver you are. Whether you live in New York City or Buffalo, Rochester or Yonkers — you can read on for the cheapest car insurance, the best car insurance, and the laws you need to know for New York car insurance.

How Much is Car Insurance in New York?

Why do car insurance quotes differ by state? First of all, each state has different laws around what kind of coverage you need to legally drive. Insurance companies also look at the number of car accidents and thefts in an area, how much people are generally using their car, and how likely an area is to have a natural disaster, among other factors. But while you can’t always control where you live, you can get cheap car insurance by choosing an insurance policy that has the best rates for your needs. If you live in New York, here’s what you should know about how much you’ll pay for insurance: On average, drivers in New York pay ${averageAnnualPremium} each year for car insurance. This means drivers in New York pay ${averageAnnualDiff} the average for the rest of the country. But however much you pay, you can use our advice on this page to save money.

What’s Your Rate?

But how do you know what policy is right for you in New York? The truth is that insurance companies take many different factors into account when coming up with your quote. They create a profile based not only on where you live in New York, but also on your credit score, marital status, the kind of car you own, and much more.
Not only does your profile change what kind of price you’ll get on car insurance, but it also might change the kind of coverage you want! Not all tiers are the same, and it’s important to know what you’re looking for. You could save money on your monthly or yearly insurance premiums by having a higher deductible. But if you do get into an accident or need to file a claim, that choice will cause you to pay more out of pocket.
The best way to make sure you’re always getting the best coverage for the right price is to let us do all the legwork for you. We can compare quotes from over 40 different insurance companies and find you the best rates in 45 seconds — no matter what kind of coverage you’re looking for.

Car Insurance Laws in New York

Yellow taxis and plenty of honking are iconic sights and sounds for New York City. But that bumper-to-bumper traffic in metro areas is more than just a movie scene: It contributes to car accidents on a daily basis, too. New Yorkers have been consistently rated among the worst and most aggressive drivers in the country, so New York’s driving laws include rules on minimum coverage amounts for car insurance. Here’s all you need to know about minimum auto insurance coverage amounts required in New York State.

What Car Insurance Is Required by Law in New York?

When you own a car in New York, the first thing you must do before even registering it is to secure car insurance. All drivers have to have three forms of insurance to legally register a car: Bodily Injury Liability (BIL), Property Damage Liability (PDL), and No-Fault Coverage.
Because New York is a no-fault state, BIL coverage ensures that anyone who is injured in the collision is eligible to have their medical expenses covered by insurance. That can include emergency vehicle response costs, lost wages, and other medical costs.
All no-fault states, including New York, require some type of no-fault insurance or Personal Injury Protection (PIP) so injured parties can receive compensation right away for medical bills. PDL insurance operates in a similar fashion but is meant to cover physical damages to property from a car accident. It may be other vehicles, stationary objects, phone poles, or city property. While it isn’t mandatory in New York, motorists should also think about purchasing uninsured motorist coverage with their car insurance. Should the other parties in an accident be driving without insurance or without reasonable levels, uninsured motorist coverage can top up the policy to cover the excessive costs.

Can You Drive a Car Legally without Insurance in New York?

You may not drive a car without insurance in New York State. Failing to meet the minimum liability insurance in the state can result in severe penalties since it’s a criminal offense. If found guilty, you will lose your driver’s license for at least one year, your vehicle registration will be suspended, and you could be subject to fines up to $1,500. A conviction could mean you’re required to carry proof of insurance to reinstate your driving privileges in the form of an SR-22 certificate. This document is provided by your insurance company and proves to authorities that you have met the minimum coverage requirements in the state. Although it’s only about $15 to file for an SR-22, higher insurance premiums are often associated with drivers who need it.

What are the Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in New York?

As is common for almost every state, New York mandates that drivers have minimum insurance amounts anytime they get behind the wheel. These laws protect the driver as well as the motorists they share the road with in the event of an accident, including any property damage that occurs as a result. To drive legally in New York, drivers must have the following minimum coverage amounts in their car insurance policy.
Minimum Insurance Requirements in New York
  • Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person and $50,000 for death of an individual in the accident
  • Bodily injury liability: $50,000 and $100,000 for death for two or more people in an accident
  • Property damage liability: $10,000 per accident
  • No-fault coverage: $50,000 per accident

Car Registration Information in New York

Registration in New York is mandatory, but drivers must first secure car insurance. With that in place, vehicle registration can be completed (and must be completed) for all vehicles that operate on the road. New York is generous compared to other states in that they allow up to 180 days to register your vehicle from the effective date on your insurance ID card.
When you register your vehicle for the first time, you will be issued license plates for both the front and rear of your car. You’ll also be issued a registration certificate that you have to have with you anytime you’re driving the vehicle. This document will have the license plate number, the vehicle identification number for the car, and the name of the person or business who registered the car.
Vehicles registered in New York don’t necessarily need to be registered by the owner. For example, a car purchased from a dealership can be registered with the dealership’s name as a service to the purchaser.
To register a car in New York, a safety inspection is required annually. You’ll need to submit an Application for Vehicle Registration, the statement of transaction, a bill of sale, your driver’s license, the original title, a NY State insurance ID card, and the initial registration fee and taxes. Registration fees are calculated based on several factors including vehicle type, unladen weight, fuel type, engine size, and county.
Renewing your vehicle registration annually is an easier process. Although it can be done in person at the DMV or by mail, it’s simple to renew your registration online so long as there aren’t any changes to report.
