How Much is Car Insurance in Idaho?

Why do car insurance quotes differ by state? First of all, each state has different laws around what kind of coverage you need to legally drive. Insurance companies also look at the number of car accidents and thefts in an area, how much people are generally using their car, and how likely an area is to have a natural disaster, among other factors. But while you can’t always control where you live, you can get cheap car insurance by choosing an insurance policy that has the best rates for your needs. If you live in Idaho, here’s what you should know about how much you’ll pay for insurance: On average, drivers in Idaho pay ${averageAnnualPremium} each year for car insurance. This means drivers in Idaho pay ${averageAnnualDiff} the average for the rest of the country. But however much you pay, you can use our advice on this page to save money.

What’s Your Rate?

But how do you know what policy is right for you in Idaho? The truth is that insurance companies take many different factors into account when coming up with your quote. They create a profile based not only on where you live in Idaho, but also on your credit score, marital status, the kind of car you own, and much more.
Not only does your profile change what kind of price you’ll get on car insurance, but it also might change the kind of coverage you want! Not all tiers are the same, and it’s important to know what you’re looking for. You could save money on your monthly or yearly insurance premiums by having a higher deductible. But if you do get into an accident or need to file a claim, that choice will cause you to pay more out of pocket.
The best way to make sure you’re always getting the best coverage for the right price is to let us do all the legwork for you. We can compare quotes from over 40 different insurance companies and find you the best rates in 45 seconds — no matter what kind of coverage you’re looking for.

Car Insurance Laws in Idaho

Best known for its potatoes and gemstones, Idaho also has a population of about 1.7 million people, which means lots of cars on the road in certain parts of the state. In response to the more than 25,000 car accidents that happen in Idaho each year, the state government requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of insurance.
Car insurance helps pay for medical expenses and property damage as a result of motor vehicle accidents across Idaho. As an at-fault state, Idaho places the burden of paying car accident costs on the insurance company of the at-fault driver. Here’s what you should know about the minimum amount of insurance that drivers need to legally register a vehicle and drive in Idaho.

What Car Insurance Is Required in Idaho?

All individuals who drive a registered motor vehicle in Idaho must be properly insured. The types of liability insurance that drivers are required to get in Idaho include Bodily Injury Liability (BIL) and Property Damage Liability (PDL).
BIL coverage extends to the driver and passengers in the vehicle the at-fault driver hits. It pays for any medical bills associated with the accident, up to the maximum coverage amount. BIL can also pay for lost wages that come about from having to deal with an injury resulting from an accident.
PDL helps pay for any property damage caused by the at-fault driver and is limited by the maximum amount of insurance coverage that the at-fault driver has. In addition to the other vehicle involved in the crash, PDL also pays for damage to structures and objects, such as a sign or pole.
As an at-fault state, Idaho does not require or even offer Personal Injury Protection (PIP). Instead of PIP insurance, the state allows drivers to get MedPay if they choose to do so. Like the PIP coverage in a no-fault state, MedPay helps pay for any medical expenses arising from a car accident and is independent of fault.
Another type of auto insurance coverage that a driver might consider getting is uninsured motorist coverage. While not a requirement, uninsured motorist coverage will give a driver protection if the at-fault driver does not have insurance. A related type of insurance is underinsured motorist coverage, which will pay for any remaining medical expenses and property damage should the at-fault driver not have enough liability insurance to pay for everything.

Can You Drive a Car Without Insurance in Idaho?

It is illegal to drive in Idaho without the minimum amount of insurance coverage. In addition, drivers must keep proof of insurance on them while driving and present this proof if they have an accident or are pulled over by law enforcement. Failure to have the required minimum coverage amounts will result in a variety of fines and penalties.
For a first offense, drivers will have to pay a $75 fine, have their license suspended until they can provide proof of insurance, and have to file for an SR-22 certificate, which places them in a high-risk category and raises their insurance premiums. They must keep the SR-22 certificate for one year.
For a second and subsequent offense, drivers must pay up to a $1,000 fine, lose their license, and must keep an SR-22 certificate on file for three years. Drivers in violation of liability insurance laws also face up to six months in jail. In all cases, drivers must also pay an administrative and reinstatement fee, which adds to their costs.
In addition, drivers who cause an accident without having insurance are still responsible for paying the medical expenses related to injuries suffered in an accident, as well as for any property damage.

What Are the Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in Idaho?

Before driving a vehicle in Idaho, drivers need to make sure they have the required amount of insurance. This minimum liability insurance requirement is done to protect drivers in an accident and help them recoup the costs for any bodily injury or property damage for an accident that was through no fault of their own.
Minimum Insurance Requirements in Idaho
