What’s the difference between a ding and a dent?

Question description: My car experienced some minor hail damage, but before I file my insurance claim, I’m confused about some terms here. Ding vs. dent: what’s the difference?

Sorry to hear you had some hail damage. “Ding” and “dent” are often used interchangeably, but there are some differences between the two.
A ding is a smaller indentation that will typically be smaller than a half-inch in diameter. It usually won’t have too much of an effect on your car’s exterior and aren’t very noticeable in most cases.
A dent covers a larger surface area and can often come along with damage to the vehicle’s paint job. As a result, it requires more work to repair, including repainting, metalwork, or replacing an entire part, depending on the extent of the damage.
