Are U-turns legal in Florida?
I just moved to Florida this month to start a new job, and I’m trying to get used to driving in the city. Back in Texas, we had U-turn lanes, so I was never confused about the law, but I can’t seem to get it straight here! Am I allowed to U-turn in Florida?

First, congratulations on the new job! It’s always tough adjusting to driving in a new city. Here’s the scoop on Florida’s U-turn law: as a general rule, U-turns are legal as long as there are no signs prohibiting them and they don’t interfere with other cars.
Keep in mind that you have to follow the usual right-of-way laws when making a U-turn, so you will usually be the last person to make a move. If you’ve got plenty of space to safely make a U-turn, though, the Sunshine State is usually okay with it!
One more thing to remember is that the U-turn laws in Florida are context-specific. Everybody has a different idea of just how much space is enough to turn around safely. So, to keep you from getting any unwanted tickets, follow these three steps:
- Make sure there are no signs that outlaw the turn.
- Check and double-check that you have enough room to turn safely.
- Make your U-turn following the rules of right-of-way.
If you stick to these principles, you should have no problem following Florida’s U-turn law!
