What is a three-point turn when you’re driving?

I recently started driver’s ed and my instructor told me we would practice 3-point turns during my next lesson. I’ve heard that term my whole life but I don’t really understand what it means. Is there any reason for me to be nervous about trying it?

Congratulations on beginning driver’s ed! A 3-point turn when driving helps you turn your car in the opposite direction when there isn’t enough space to make a U-turn. It’s named a 3-point turn because there are three main movements you make to complete the turn.
When you go to make a 3-point turn, you should do the following:
  • Turn on your blinker
  • Check to see it’s safe to turn
  • Turn your car to the left and pull up—be carefull not to hit a curb or parked car
  • Put your car in reverse and turn the wheel back
  • Approach the car or curb on the other side
  • Check again to make sure there are no cars around
  • Put the car in drive and turn the wheel left again
  • Straighten out and begin driving
If you follow these steps you’ll be able to change the direction you are driving even if you’re on a narrow street with a lot of parked cars. If you’re in a very tight space, you may need to follow these steps in smaller increments. Although it may be time-consuming, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
