How much is a 2020 BMW 8 Series sedan?

When they were new, the MSRPs for the 2020 BMW 8 Series ran from around $86,000 to $123,000. A used model is less money today, but it’s by no means cheap—depending on the trim level and body style, a 2020 8 series sedan will be between $75,000 and $90,000
Prices and availability will also vary greatly by location, condition and mileage. In general, expect to pay the most for a
convertible 2020 M850i
with all-wheel drive and the least for the 840i trims.

Is a 2020 BMW 8 Series a good buy?

The 2020 BMW 8 Series is awash in power, performance, and style—and even used, carries a steep price tag. Car and Driver awarded the 2020 BMW 8 Series an 8.5/10, and loved the powerful V8 engine and high-class interior.
If you’re a fan of performance luxury cars in general and/or BMW in particular, it might just be the decadent used car for you. Let’s take a closer look!

Reliability

Let’s be upfront about it: in general,
BMWs are pretty unreliable
overall. But J.D. Power gave the 2020 8 Series an 85/100 for quality and reliability, which is decent. RepairPal doesn’t have any specific information for the 2020 8 Series, but gives BMW in general a 2.5 out of 5 for reliability and ranks it at 30th out of 32 for all car brands.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued four recalls for the 2020 8 Series (more on that later). So…not great.
Overall, it would be fair to say that you can probably anticipate having more reliability issues with any BMW than the average vehicle, and this will likely hold true for the 2020 8 Series.

Speed and performance

This is one area where the 2020 8 Series shines! There were two engine choices were dependent on the trim level:
  • 840i: turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline six with 335 horsepower and 368 lb/ft of torque
  • M850i: twin-turbo, 4.4-liter V8 with 523 horsepower and 553 lb/ft of torque
The 840i models will come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the M850i will have a nine-speed version. Sorry, stick shift fans—no manual option here. The 840i has either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive (aka xDrive in BMW speak), while the 850i models will be all-wheel drive only.
So how do they drive? With power, confidence, and fun. Even with the smaller engine, the 8 Series delivers an engaging drive—and if you get the V8, you’ll be cruising with the best of them.
The handling is peppy but confident and stately. The ride is quiet and luxurious. Is it fast? It certainly can be. Edmunds reported that the M850i versions can get from 0 to 60 in an impressive 3.6 seconds

Fuel economy

There are no hybrid versions available for the 8 Series, so it’s a gasoline-only affair—and premium gasoline, at that.
The six-cylinder 840i models will get the best gas mileage, with a combined rating of 23 mpg for rear-wheel drive and 20 mpg for all-wheel drive. With its larger engine and standard all-wheel drive, M850i models will get the lowest fuel economy of the bunch, at 18 mpg combined.

Interior and comfort

New or used, for a BMW at this price point you would expect a seriously opulent interior and more features than you can shake a stick at, and the 2020 8 Series does not disappoint. Every 8 Series has power-adjustable heated seats, leather upholstery, customizable ambient lighting, and soft-close doors.
Upgrades were available to provide even swankier interior materials, ventilated seats, additional speakers for the already premium-grade Harman Kardon sound system, and more. But suffice to say that no matter what 2020 8 Series you get, it’ll provide top-notch comfort and style.

Safety

As is the case with many luxury brands, there’s no crash test data available from either the NHTSA or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2020 8 Series.
However, the NHTSA did report four recalls for the 2020 8 Series, two of which involved the rear-view camera giving faulty imaging and increasing the risk of backing into/over something. The other two were for a possible failure of the anti-lock brake system during a hard braking event, and faulty seat belt sensors
