Why is driving in snow at night dangerous?

We were taught in driver’s ed that you should avoid driving in the snow at night. Why is that? I know that you can slip on the snow, but that can happen during the daytime too.

Driving in snow at night is dangerous because the snow makes it very difficult to see. Your headlights will reflect off of the snowflakes in the air as well as obstruct your view. This means that the harder it’s snowing, the more dangerous it is to drive.
If you’re caught
driving in a snowstorm
late at night, try not to panic. Here are some safety tips that could help:
  • Slow down as much as possible to give yourself more time to react to potential hazards if necessary
  • Use your low-beam headlights to prevent the snow from reflecting more light back at you
  • If you’re having a lot of difficulties seeing, pull over until the snow slows down or until someone can come to help you
