What gear should you use when driving uphill in an automatic?

I’m getting ready to go on a road trip through Tennessee and I’m a little nervous to take my car on all of the hills. How do you drive an automatic on a steep incline? Should I put it in a different gear to make sure I make it up the hill?

That sounds like such a fun trip, and it’s great that you’re preparing in advance! You can typically keep your car in Drive, or the D gear, when driving up a small or average-sized hill in an automatic.
However,
Tennessee
is known for having a lot of big hills. If you’re approaching a particularly large or steep incline, you can adjust the gear to D2 or D3 to get more momentum. This will also reduce engine wear, meaning it’s better for your car, too!
