In which states do I need an international driving permit?

My family is coming to New York City from Portugal, and we’re planning to rent a car. We’re going to tour a few states, but I’m not sure about international driving permit requirements. What states require an IDP?

It’s a good idea to be aware of the requirements before arriving at your destination! A handful of states do require international travelers to have an international driving permit (IDP) to drive legally.
Visitors from out-of-country who plan to drive will need an IDP to drive in the following states:
  • Alabama
  • Alaska
  • Arkansas
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Idaho
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington
Note that in some states where IDPs aren’t required, if you’re staying for more than 90 days, you’ll have to obtain a permit.
Knowing the international driving requirements in the state you plan to visit can save you from potential fines for not following the rules. But it’s also important to ensure you have the right car insurance to protect you, too!
Your rental car agency should be able to help steer you in the right direction, but it may also help to download the
