Why did my insurance rate go up after I finished traffic school?

Doesn't your insurance policy go down if you finish traffic school? I have a couple of speeding tickets and the judge said he would lower my points if I completed a safe driving course. I completed the course and my insurance policy still went up! Is this normal?

“Completing traffic school will lower your driver’s license points but not necessarily the points on your insurance policy. These are two different point systems, and while they are often confused, they are not connected at all.
The judge only has jurisdiction over driver’s license points. Each state has a different point system, and some don’t use one at all.
Each moving violation will have a driver’s license point value assigned to it. If too many points build up, the driver will receive a license suspension. In this case, the judge allowed you to go to traffic school to lessen the likelihood of receiving a license suspension.
Insurance points are surcharges that get applied to your policy due to accidents or tickets. They can stay on your policy between three and five years and then will automatically fall off. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to reduce the points, but sometimes completing a driver safety course will help lower the premium of your
car insurance policy
.
Check with your agent to see if a
driving course
you completed will help lower your rate. They may request a certificate of completion in order to apply the discount.
Not every carrier rates tickets the same way, so it may be time to shop for a
cheaper insurance policy
if you are unhappy with your premium. The easiest way to re-shop a policy is by comparing multiple insurance companies together.
