Mercedes-Benz gets its name from a combination of two names—Mercedes Jellinek and Karl Benz.
However, Mercedes-Benz was originally founded by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler and was first known as Daimler-Benz—an homage to the founders. The brand was also part of Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG).
The Mercedes name emerged in 1901 after the death of Daimler. Emil Jellinek, a racing enthusiast and entrepreneur, was brought on to the company and helped create the Mercedes 35hp in 1900, which he named after his daughter—Mercedes Jellinek.
In 1902, the company would go on to trademark “Mercedes” under DMG. The new vehicles were soon marketed abroad to high-profile families including the Rockefellers, Astors, and Morgans. However, Benz wasn’t officially added to the Mercedes models until DMG merged with Benz & Cie in 1926.
