Can you drive a rental car to Canada?
I’m going on a business trip to Buffalo, but I’m thinking about taking my rental car to Canada on my one day off. I’m not sure if this is possible, so I thought I’d find out before I make plans. Can I take my rental car to Canada from the U.S.?

In most cases, you can drive a rental car to Canada without any issues. You just need to follow the proper steps to ensure you have all the documentation and approval from the rental car company.
Follow these steps to make the process quick and painless:
- Ask the rental car company if you can take the car to Canada. In all likelihood, it’s not an issue, so long as you aren’t driving a cargo van, exotic car, or large passenger van.
- Make sure you have the propercar insurance. You can use your personal insurance and decline the rental insurance, or if you don’t have your own insurance, you should accept the rental car insurance.
- Get a Canadian non-resident insurance card. The rental car company should provide you with this, but ask to make sure you get one.
- Bring your passport, COVID-19 vaccination card, and license, as well as the Canadian non-resident insurance card, with you to the border.
Canada has higher car insurance requirements than the U.S., so check with the province to make sure you have the correct coverage. In your case, you’ll have to search Ontario minimum car insurance laws.
