When driving a forklift, what height should the forks be?

I’m about to start a job at a warehouse where I’ll need to drive a forklift. I know it’s somewhat similar to driving a car, but I’m still wondering about the differences. When driving a forklift, what height should the forks be?

Congrats on the new job! When driving a forklift, the forks should be a height of 6 to 10 inches off the ground.
This assumes you’re operating the forklift in a typical warehouse setting with an even floor surface. In outdoor settings or on rough terrain, the forks should be slightly higher.
As a rule of thumb, the height of the forks should be:
  • High enough to clear the terrain
  • Low enough to avoid hitting someone in the head or lower torso by accident
Some other best practices for driving a forklift include tilting the mast of the forklift backward when carrying a load and distributing the weight of the load properly. As with driving any vehicle, safety is key.
