What is a median in driving?
I was recently driving on the highway and I saw a sign that said not to cross the median. What is the median, and why am I not allowed to cross it?

Many drivers don’t know what a median is, so you may be able to share this information with your friends. The median on a road is essentially the barrier that divides traffic moving in different directions or at different speeds.
The most common place you’ll see a median is on large
highways
, where there is a barrier blocking off one side of traffic from another. Sometimes a median also separates “through traffic” roads, such as highways from local roads. This is because through traffic is generally moving much faster than traffic on local roads
.You’re not allowed to cross a median because it’s dangerous. Generally, the privilege to cross a median is reserved for emergency vehicles such as:
- Law enforcement
- Firefighters
- Ambulances
- Maintenance workers
