SRT stands for “Street and Racing Technology,” a dedicated branch of Stellantis (the umbrella company that owns Dodge, Ram, and other names you know) devoted to developing powerful high-performance vehicles—essentially modern muscle cars.
. Rather than taking away from the success of the SRT label, devoting it exclusively to Dodge has established it in the minds of the general public as the street-racing vehicle. Even a recent action film opted to show off the strength of an SRT-make to add to the dynamism of a car chase.
Is the SRT division heading in a new direction?
However, as of a few months ago, Stellantis announced a plan to dissolve the SRT division. Rather than doing away with the powerful tech, however, the parent company intends to take a more holistic approach, having SRT specialists work within the individual brands.
A Stellantis representative delved into how that integration will work out in a recent interview with
: “This action will have the two-way benefit of ensuring that our brands' SRT and performance-focused product offerings continue to meet the highest quality standards and expectations while delivering key learnings from motorsports and other high-performance-technology applications across a wider mix of our company's product lines.”
high-speed chase? All Dodge SRTs share a special engine; a V8 boasting an unbelievable 797hp and 707 lb-ft of torque. This Dodge signature is referred to as the HEMI engine and can be found in the Durango, Challenger, and Charger.
But it doesn't stop there. The body of a Dodge SRT is designed aerodynamically in order to cut through the air smoothly and powerfully, and at the same time, prevent resistance so that the driver has complete control of the powerful vehicle.
To complement the speed and power of an SRT model, Dodge utilizes the Brembo brake system, a brand name feature that's considered the best in the industry. Brembo brakes not only reduce emissions, but can also respond to the slightest depression of the foot, and handle friction smoothly, thanks to their carbon-ceramic makeup.
As with many traditional American brands, Stellantis is facing a future that's not so friendly to 8-cylinder engines sending off massive amounts of fuel emissions (yes, even with Brembo brakes), and is
a world with electric and hybrid street and racing technology.
