What happens if my driver's license has expired?

My driver’s license is set to expire in about a week. But with work and my kids, I don’t know when I’m going to find time to go to the DMV. What happens if I get pulled over with an expired license?

If you feel like you can’t get to the DMV to get your license renewed before it expires, don’t worry too much. States offer grace periods that allow you to renew your license without the need to retake your driving or written tests.
However, you can’t drive until you get a new license. Penalties for driving with an expired driver’s license vary by state, but you can face fines or even jail time for driving with an expired license.
For example,
California
has a fine of up to $1,000 or six months of jail time for driving with an expired license. Therefore, you should get a ride to the DMV to straighten out the issue.
If you wait more than the allotted grace period to renew your license, the state will probably require you to retake the road test and written test.
