Rivian is taking a different approach to motors than automakers traditionally do. Traditionally, motors are in-house creations. Rivian has chosen so far to outsource its electric motors. It’s been speculated that this was done to accelerate the launch of its R1T pickup truck.
Rivian eventually plans to phase in its own motor design, along with a heat pump and 800-volt electrical architecture.
Electric vehicles have opened the doors for a variety of different ways to source vehicle components. For instance, General Motors has designed a new generation of electric motors, but the company says it won’t be directly building them, implying that it holds the patent, but is having the building portion outsourced.
