and new EVs under the VW name, Volkswagen is solidifying its place in the modern car market. This has made many fans wonder if the manufacturer will revive its most iconic car brand
and make a 2022 VW Beetle.According to

, there are currently no plans for a 2022 Beetle. Considering the current projects that Volkswagen is working on, though, it seems reasonable that they may bring it back soon.
What happened to the VW Beetle?
There are plenty of
discontinued cars that should be resurrected
, and the VW Beetle is certainly deserving of a spot on the list. The latest generation of Beetle was produced from 2011 to 2019 and was known as the A5. While the VW Beetle A5 was never the best-selling car on the market, it was always an iconic model. When Volkswagen announced that production of the Beetle was coming to an end, many were confused and sad. Since then, there has been much speculation about what a future Beetle would look like.
A lot of the speculation has been focused on the possibility of an electric Beetle. An electric VW Bug would make a lot of sense considering the trajectory of the company as a whole. It would not be the only electric vehicle revival that they have done.
The EV VW Microbus is a new twist on a classic
The Volkswagen Type 2 is the manufacturer's second-most famous vehicle. Known more popularly as the Microbus, the Type 2 became a staple of Hippie culture in the '60s. Today, it is a beloved relic of a classic vehicle.
An electric revival of the Type 2 was announced in 2017, and this revived vehicle is known as the Volkswagen ID. Buzz or the Electric Microbus. It is slated for
release in 2022
, and its design is both a tribute to the Type 2 and a showcase of futuristic technology.For some fans, the revival of a VW classic is enough to fuel the hype of a potential electric VW Beetle. Despite this, it looks like fans are going to have to keep waiting.
Volkswagen's electric future
A primary focus for Volkswagen has been working on their MEB platform, which their electric vehicles will use. Many manufacturers are committing to shifting their focus entirely to EVs in the future. It looks like this may be the direction that VW is heading.
In 2020, they released their ID.4 electric crossover SUV, which has received mostly positive reception. They also announced a larger electric SUV, the ID.8.
You might be itching to hear an announcement about an electric VW Beetle, don’t lose hope just yet! The Beetle has been revived before, and because it’s such an iconic model, there’s a good chance it’ll be revived again. Plus, with a break in production, it could mean that whenever the Beetle does return, it'll be better than ever.
