What do you do after paying off a car loan? What do you do after paying off a car loan?

What should I do now that I’ve paid off my car loan? I want to make sure I’ve done everything so that my car is in my name.

Congratulations on paying off your car loan! The first thing you’ll want to do is get ahold of your
car title
. The way to do this will vary from state to state, so it’s a good idea to contact the DMV to see what the process will be like for you.
In some states, you won’t need to do any work at all; the lienholder will contact the DMV to inform them of the change, and you’ll receive your title in the mail within a week or two.
In other states, though, you’ll need to fill out some paperwork before you receive your title. If this is the case, you’ll receive a lien release and formal documentation that the loan is paid in full, which you’ll then need to bring to the DMV to get your title.
