Should you check the engine oil when it’s cold or hot?

This feels like a stupid question, but I’ve never owned a car before, so I’m just going to ask anyway. Should you check the engine oil level when it’s cold or hot?

There’s no shame in asking questions—that’s how you’ll get answers! You should check your engine oil level when it’s cold rather than hot.
That’s because, for one thing, you don’t want to burn yourself while your vehicle and the engine oil are still hot. For another, it takes a moment for your car’s oil to drain back into the oil pan after you’ve turned it off, which you’ll have to wait for to get an accurate reading.
Your car doesn’t necessarily have to be completely cooled down, as long as the temperature isn’t high enough to hurt you. Typically, you should be able to check your oil after your car’s been off for 15-20 minutes.
While you’re taking care of your car’s maintenance, make sure it’s protected by the right
