Is renters insurance required in Illinois?

I’m moving into a new apartment. My landlord said it’s required that I have renters insurance. I’m already going to be a bit tight on money as my rent is higher than my previous place. Is renters insurance a requirement in Illinois?

Moving is exciting, but I know it can be difficult when rent prices are skyrocketing. While renters insurance isn’t required in Illinois, you may be legally bound to purchase renters insurance by your lease.
Currently, no law in any state requires tenants to carry
renters insurance
. But many landlords require it as part of the lease agreement to avoid liability for any potential damage that may occur while you’re living there.
If you signed a lease stating you would obtain renters insurance, you need to get it. Otherwise, your landlord could choose to evict you for breaking your lease. While extra costs can be stressful, you typically can get a renters insurance policy for only a few dollars a month.
The best way to find a cheap renters insurance policy is to shop around with several companies. Doing so will find you the lowest rate for the coverage you need. If you’d rather leave the hard work of gathering quotes to someone else, you should use
Jerry
. The Jerry app collects quotes from top insurance companies like Nationwide and Travelers in seconds.
