Is renters insurance required in DC?

My request to work out of my company’s DC office was recently approved, so I’ve spent the last couple of days apartment hunting. Every apartment I look at asks for proof of renters insurance, but is renters insurance required in DC?

Congratulations on getting your request approved! I’m sure apartment hunting has been stressful, but I hope you’re getting excited about the move!
By law, renters insurance is not required in DC. However, many landlords do and will ask to see
proof of insurance
before letting you sign a lease agreement. Having renters insurance protects you, landlords, and their units or property from damage or liability if something should happen.
Even if you find an apartment that doesn’t require renters insurance, it typically only costs about $160 a year in DC, so it may be a worthwhile investment to know you and your belongings are covered.
If you want peace of mind knowing you’re not overpaying for either renters or
car insurance
, you should use the
Jerry
app.
After providing you with a comprehensive cross-analysis of the best policies across providers, Jerry will handle the phone calls, paperwork, and renewals for your top pick so that you don’t have to. They even help cancel your old policy.
