Is lane splitting legal in North Carolina?

I just moved to North Carolina, and I brought my motorcycle with me. I was told that the driving laws for motorcyclists are different here than where I’m from. Lane splitting is what I’m really curious about since I hate sitting in traffic. In North Carolina, is lane splitting legal?

North Carolina is a great place to live! In North Carolina, lane splitting for motorcyclists is not specifically outlawed. What is outlawed, however, is for a motorcycle to pass a vehicle on the right. There are limited circumstances where this is allowed.
Here are some other driving laws in North Carolina that motorcyclists should be aware of:
  • Motorcycle operators must be at least 16 years old to operate on a highway or in a public area in North Carolina.
  • You are required to wear a motorcycle safety helmet when using a moped.
  • All motorcycles need to have a motorcycle endorsement on their license.
  • All motorcycles must be considered street legal per the standards set by North Carolina.
A street legal motorcycle in North Carolina must have the following:
  • Two mirrors
  • A horn
  • Turn signals
  • Headlight, taillight, and brake lights
  • Front and rear brakes
