Do mufflers decrease power?
My brother is telling me to do a muffler delete—take off my Honda Civic’s muffler—so I’ll have more horsepower. Is this true? Do mufflers decrease power?

Oh my—the muffler delete debate! Car enthusiasts are right when they say mufflers can decrease engine power. Frankly, this applies mainly to older cars—typically, much older ones manufactured 15+ years ago. By removing the muffler, a person may find they gain some horsepower, but usually less than five hp of added power.
Another reason people take off a muffler is because it makes the car sound more powerful.
There are, however, several important cons to taking off the muffler, from breaking noise code ordinances to actually seeing poor engine performance in newer cars.
Instead of deleting your muffler, why not consider aftermarket performance ones? A bit of internet searching will reveal numerous choices.
