Gasoline is easily one of the most dangerous liquids you can buy as a consumer. It’s highly flammable, its fumes are toxic, and digesting it can kill you. So when you’re handling gasoline, you need to be extremely careful.
If you’re transporting gasoline inside your car, you must observe the following safety rules at all times:
Only use containers designed specifically for transporting gasoline. Referred to as Jerry cans, these containers are purpose-built for holding fuel. Never use anything else!
Fill gas cans outside of your vehicle. Place the can on flat, even ground away from your vehicle. If you spill gasoline on the side of the container, clean it thoroughly before putting it in your car.
Fill the gas can to 99%. As the fuel warms up, it will expand and leak, so leave some breathing room.
Close the gasoline container properly and securely before putting it in your car. Gas cans have caps that form an airtight seal.
Don’t leave gas cans in your car or inside your home. As temperatures rise, the gas can will vent dangerous fumes that can poison you. A full gas can also pose serious fire risks.
Don’t horde gasoline. Gasoline is only good for about three to six months, even when it’s stored in a proper container. After that, it’ll get stale and cause damage to your engine.
Knowing how to safely transport gasoline is something every car owner should know. And knowing you can save hundreds of dollars per year or more on car insurance
