Is a GMC Acadia a midsize SUV?

My sedan finally made it to the car graveyard, but this time around, I think I’m going to upgrade to something a little bit bigger. A midsize SUV would meet my needs, and I like what the GMC Acadia has. Is the Acadia a midsize SUV or something else?

Your first guess was mostly right—the GMC Acadia is technically a midsize crossover SUV. To that effect, an SUV technically needs to ride on a body-on-frame/truck platform. The Acadia uses a unibody platform that’s similar to passenger cars, hence the crossover title.
Aside from a lower towing capacity than most midsize SUVs (4,000 pounds), the Acadia’s other features are comparable to what you’d find in a traditional SUV. They include:
  • Exterior style that’s more like a truck than a crossover or SUV
  • Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder or 3.6-liter V6 engine
  • Available 20-inch wheels
  • Seating for up to six passengers
  • 79 cubic feet of cargo space
  • Five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
