background
The GMC Terrain is GMC’s only true compact SUV. The Terrain is great for those who want the looks of a rugged SUV in a small package. However, while having a spacious interior with ample cargo space, the build feels subpar thanks to the mix of materials used.
The GMC Terrain is the automaker’s only true compact SUV, leaving customers with little choice for a ute in a small package. After all, the brand mainly focuses on large trucks and utility vehicles. However, some may find the Terrain underwhelming in performance and may want to size up to other models for better versatility.
To help you decide if the GMC Terrain compact SUV is a good fit, we’ll explore the distinct trim levels available. We'll also outline GMC’s other smaller cars for you to take into consideration. Be sure to read until the end so you don’t miss out on a helpful tip to save on

2022 GMC compact and subcompact SUV models

Currently, GMC offers one compact SUV with three distinct trim levels that cater to different driving needs—the GMC Terrain.

2022 GMC Terrain ($31,295 MSRP)

The GMC Terrain is the company’s smallest (and only) compact SUV. Sharing the same platform as the
Chevy Equinox
, the Terrain also got a style refresh for 2022, including a restyled grille and front bumper, updated LED head and tail lamps, redesigned 18” and 19” wheels, and new upholstery. The updated Terrain also adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
The gas-powered engine is fuel efficient for its class, which helps cut down on gas costs but may not make up for the higher price tag of the compact SUV. Some may find the interior to be polarizing with the mix of materials and subpar build quality.
Edmunds rates the Terrain with a score of 6.5/10, which is below average, and ranks it last out of 14 small SUVs. Car and Driver concurs with its own rating of 6/10. On the other hand, the Terrain scores the highest on J.D. Power with an 85/100 and is considered second on their list of Best Compact and Small SUVs of 2022—only defeated by the
Buick Envision
.
Highlights of the Terrain include:
  • Rugged look in a compact package
  • Sleek outdoorsy style
  • Easy to get in and out of the rear seats
  • Spacious and accommodating interior
  • Great engine sound
  • 60/40 split-folding rear seats and fold-flat front seat for more cargo space
  • Easy-to-use infotainment system
  • Well-placed cubbies for holding items in the right spot
  • NHTSA five-star overall safety rating
  • EPA rating of 26/25/30 mpg (combined/city/highway)
Weaknesses of the model include:
  • 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine is no longer an option
  • Disappointing acceleration from the 1.5L turbocharged engine
  • Subpar handling in slippery conditions
  • Poor ergonomic placement of the push-button shifter
  • Less competitive cargo space
  • High price point

2022 GMC Terrain AT4 ($37,395 MSRP)

For the first time ever, GMC introduced the Terrain AT4, built for action and adventure. With newfound off-road capabilities, this trim level is a good choice for casual outdoor adventurers. However, some may find that the engine still lacks power, which limits its off-roading experience.
The Terrain AT4 ratings are the same as the regular Terrain on both Edmunds and Car and Driver.
Highlights of the Terrain AT4 include:
  • Even more rugged styling compared to the regular Terrain
  • Standard all-wheel drive
  • AWD traction select system allows the AT4 to handle all sorts of terrains
  • Unique exterior accents and finishes
  • Ample cabin space for front and back passengers
  • NHTSA five-star overall safety rating
Weaknesses include:
  • Interior materials can be polarizing
  • Not built for handling extreme off-roading
  • Essentially an appearance package

2022 GMC Terrain Denali ($39,995 MSRP)

If you’re looking for a more luxurious compact SUV and don’t mind the larger price tag, the
Terrain Denali
will fit the bill. For almost $40,000, this top-of-the-line Terrain gets 19” wheels, LED headlights, a heated steering wheel, navigation, and parking sensors. You’ll also have the option of adding a sunroof, Bose audio, power seats, a power tailgate, and more.
Edmunds doesn’t rate this trim level separately so it is still a 6.5/10, which is considered below average on their scale. Car and Driver gives a 6/10.
Highlights of the Terrain Denali include:
  • Rugged look and feel with a comfortable cabin
  • Quiet cabin even at high speeds
  • Standard in-dash navigation
  • Standard head-up display
  • Premium suspension smooths out any bumpy road
  • GMC Pro Safety Plus includes many safety features
  • Generous storage capacity
  • NHTSA five-star overall safety rating
Weaknesses include:
  • Unimpressive acceleration from an underpowered engine
  • Not as fast as competitors in the same class
  • Premium price tag

Other small GMC models

The three trim levels above are GMC’s smallest SUVs. However, the automaker has one other smaller SUV that should also be kept in mind so you don’t limit your options. We’ve listed the rest of the brand’s compact vehicles below.

2022 GMC Acadia ($36,145 MSRP)

The
GMC Acadia
is the other smaller SUV offering but is considered a midsize SUV. However, it offers more versatility and power over the Terrain and has three rows of seating. The 2022 Acadia now has a host of standard driver-assistance features across all trim levels including lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automated emergency braking.
Edmunds doesn’t have a rating for the Acadia but owners have given it a 4.5/5 rating. Car and Driver unfortunately rates this SUV at 5.5/10.
Highlights of the Acadia include:
  • Family-friendly with a rugged style
  • Refined ride quality
  • Optional V6 engine has a perky acceleration
  • Modern onboard tech features
  • Cabin layout is practical and versatile
Weaknesses include:
  • Premium price tag for low-end interior
  • Third-row seating is snug
  • Not as fuel efficient as some competitors
If you’re up for bigger GMC models, here is the rest of what the automaker has to offer:

How to save on GMC insurance

A compact SUV generally has lower insurance premiums compared to larger vehicles—but it also depends on your trim level and options. Higher trim levels and upgrades will also push your insurance rates higher as it would cost more for providers to provide coverage.
