How much electricity does a self-driving car use?
I love cars, but driving and parking…not so much. I’m also lazy! Hah! Anyways, I’ve been looking into new cars that self-drive, and I wanted to know how much electricity these self-driving vehicles use?

! And what a great question! Autonomous driving is an impressive technology that continues to improve in accuracy and reliability each year. Here’s what we know about how much electricity a self-driving car uses:
- Currently, self-driving cars are either hybrid **or electric**. It’s predicted that in the future, all autonomous driving vehicles will be_ _electric.
- The amount of energy consumed can depend on various factors and conditions. The Luminar IrisLiDartechnology uses 25 watts of continuous power. And the NVIDIA Drive Pegasus computer consumes about 400 watts of power.
- These systems also need backup systems, which use energy as well. It’s important to remember that these systems are not 100% accurate, and in some cases have led to serious injuries and worse.
