A Dodge Challenger
may have four, six, or eight cylinders. New Challengers will have six or eight cylinders. If you’re buying a used or new muscle car from Dodge, the V6 is standard and the V8 is optional.
The standard engine on the 2023 Dodge Challenger is a V6 with 305 horsepower. Most drivers who are shopping for a muscle car will want a bit more power, however.
If you want a little more oomph, opt for the HEMI V8 engine which is available in various displacements from 5.7L to 6.4L (and 485 horsepower). You’ll pay a few extra thousand bucks for the R/T model, but it’s well worth it for the additional power.
While the all-wheel drive option on the Challenger may reduce your overall fuel economy, you’ll find that the V6 and V8 engines deliver about the same mileage (26 highway mpg).
Second-generation Challengers, manufactured between 1978 and 1983, had four-cylinder engines. But we doubt you’re in the market for this kind of vehicle!
Ultimately, the Charger is slightly more expensive but the Challenger is slightly faster. There aren’t any major performance differences if you’re not obsessed with horsepower. Both would be great choices for your first sports car.
