The short answer is that you should get your registration updated as soon as possible. Most states have a grace period, but you can still face penalties for driving with an expired registration tag.
If you drive with an expired tag in New York, you’re subject to penalties as follows:
If your tag is less than 60 days expired, you have to pay at least $40 (depending on the jurisdiction) and a $93 surcharge fee
If your tag is 60 days expired or more, you will have to pay a fee between $70 and $300 along with the same surcharge
In the future, you should look for a reminder in the mail about 45-60 days before your registration is set to expire. That way, you can plan in advance and avoid driving on an expired tag.
