Where do electric car companies buy their lithium-ion batteries?

Do large EV manufacturers create their own batteries or do they buy them from an external company and put them in their vehicles? Where do electric car companies get their lithium-ion batteries?

Great question! This is one we get a lot. Many EV companies outsource their battery manufacturing to one of several companies including Panasonic, LG Energy solutions, BYD, and CATL.
There are so many components to making a vehicle, it is hard for any company to be an expert at everything. Tesla’s batteries are manufactured at CATL, Panasonic, and LG Energy and the company is building good relations with BYD as well. CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited) operates out of China and has the largest number of connections to the auto industry including companies like BMW, Honda, Great Wall, and Hyundai.
LG Energy, a division of LG Chem, is a South Korea-based manufacturer in heavy competition with CATL for the spot of the top battery supplier in the world. Panasonic, the Japanese battery company, also has a foot in the lithium-ion battery market too.
The company is in good relations with Tesla after having invested over $1.6 billion dollars in the Tesla Gigafactory. Toyota is also interested in building a battery factory in Japan to supply lithium-ion batteries for the company.
BYD is the top-selling EV manufacturer, and now battery supplier. With its large and booming EV market in China, the company has beat out Tesla in car sales and is now a competitor in the battery supply market as well.
