How do you use an electric splicer for a car?
I want to install various lights and possibly some tow mirrors in my small truck. I’ve heard that extending or splicing wiring can decrease the amount of wiring overall. How do you use an electric splicer for a car?

Before you start your project, it’s important to ensure you have the proper tools to get the job done. It’s a good idea to have a razor, wire cutters, wire strippers, butt connectors, and electrical tape.
Here’s how to use an electric splicer for a car:
- To** extend** or splice an automotive electrical wire, pick a spot on the wire by the connector. It doesn’t have to be super close to it.
- Next, cut the wire with wire cutters and slice the outer sheath with your razor blade.
- With a wire stripper, strip the insulation from the ends of the wires by an inch or so.
- **Twist **the copper core wire ends and repeat these steps for wire extensions or additional wiring harnesses.
- If you’re branching or splicing a wire in two opposite directions, twist wires that correspond to the branched wires together.
- If two wires are connected, connect the double wire side of a butt connector. It’s important to twist the butt connector as much as possible to each branching off wire.
- Take the now-branched wire and crimp the butt connector. Make sure it’s connected tightly.
- Connect the wire extension to the butt connector making sure it’s twisted in well. Then crimp the button connector to the wire extension.
- Lastly, seal the extended wire by applying electrical tape. This will protect the wires from outdoor elements and keep them connected.
