How do you transfer plates from one car to another?
I’m buying a new car that’s used, but I want to keep my old license plate. How do I transfer it to the new car?

Although it’s easy to forget, transferring your license plates after
buying a new car
is fairly easy. The first way is at the DMV. While this process can vary from state to state, in most cases, you’ll need:
- The new car’s title
- Your driver’s license
- Application for Registration
- Payment for fees
The second way is at the dealership. If you’re purchasing a vehicle through a dealership and trading in your old car, the dealership may do the transfer for you. They require the same information as above but can help get the process moving and save you time.
Since you’ll need proof of insurance to register your new car and transfer your plates, be sure you have the best insurance possible. While you may have been happy with your old insurance rate, prices can change when you get a new car. Before adding your new vehicle to your current policy, shop around!
