The 2022 Toyota Sequoia has a gas tank size of 26.4 gallons in each trim level and drivetrain configuration. The upcoming 2023 Toyota Sequoia lowers this threshold to 22.5 gallons but significantly improves fuel economy with a standard hybrid engine.
When considering your next full-size SUV, knowing your vehicle’s gas tank size helps estimate how much fuel you’ll be purchasing with each gas station trip. As the 2023 Toyota Sequoia rolls out its new hybrid engine powertrain this summer, though, fuel tank capacity and fuel efficiency will shift from what we’ve seen in previous models.

How big is the gas tank on a Toyota Sequoia?
For each trim level and drivetrain option of the 2022 and 2023 Toyota Sequoia, the gas tank size remains the same. On the 2022 Sequoia, that tank size is 26.4 gallons whereas the 2023 model will be 22.5 gallons.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia’s shrinking fuel capacity is likely due to its new standard 3.5L i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo hybrid V6 engine and electric motor. This new hybrid powertrain greatly improves the Sequoia’s fuel efficiency from last year’s measly EPA-estimated 13/17/15 MPG city/highway/combined rating to a much more respectable 21/24/22 MPG. Therefore, while you can’t put as much gas into your 2023 Sequoia’s tank, you also won’t need as much.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia’s new gas tank size comes as a rare change when looking at past Sequoia models. The fuel tank had maintained a consistent 26.4-gallon capacity from 2005 to 2022, with models between 2001 and 2004 featuring a marginally smaller 26.1-gallon limit.
Don’t be spooked by the 2023 Toyota Sequoia’s historic gas tank size decrease, though. When calculating the SUV’s new average mileage, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia has a maximum range of495 miles combined city/highway driving on a full tank of gas. That’s 99 more miles than the 2022 Toyota Sequoia’s maximum range of 396 miles.

How to check your Toyota Sequoia’s gas tank size
If you’re not quite buying these measurements of your current (or future) Sequoia model’s gas tank size, there are a few ways you can confirm the number on your own.
Check the owner’s manual
The most straightforward way to determine your SUV’s gas tank size is to look up its “fuel tank capacity” (or a similar phrase) in your owner’s manual. Unlike online resources, you can trust your manual to have the correct specs and information for your specific vehicle.
Measure your gas tank
Believe it or not, you can calculate your Sequoia’s gas volume with a measuring tape and a calculator. All you have to do is multiply the width, length, and height of the tank, then divide that number by 231 to convert the cubic inches into gallons.
Use the fuel pump’s measurements
Okay, this method is not for the faint of heart, but it’s a fairly easy one to do: drive until your Sequoia’s “E” light comes on, then see how much fuel the pump measures when you fill it up. This won’t be a completely accurate measurement, but it will give you a general idea of how big your gas tank is. Don’t drive too long on an empty tank, though!

How to save on fuel costs in a Toyota Sequoia
Though the upcoming 2023 Toyota Sequoia will solve some gas inflation woes with its hybrid powertrain, it’s not going to save you as much on gas as a smaller crossover hybrid like the Kia Niro LX—the Kia’s insurance costs
do tend to run higher than the Sequoia’s, however. For drivers of current, non-hybrid models of the Sequoia, big gas costs likely come part and parcel—especially with fuel economy ratings on par with heavy-duty trucks like the Chevy Silverado 2500
. However, as the only full-size, full-frame, truck-based SUV out there with a hybrid engine, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is at least an innovator in fuel efficiency. There are ways youcan improve its fuel economy, too:
Perform routine maintenance. Minor issues like low tire pressure and worn-down gas caps can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 3% if left unchecked.
Glide to your advantage. Easing up on the gas pedal helps lower your fuel consumption. Accelerate slowly and mindfully when you need to reach a higher speed.
Don’t idle. Try not to idle, especially in cold weather. Warming up your SUV while driving rather than before driving will help you save on fuel costs.
