The largest SUV from Volvo is the three-row XC90, a beautifully designed, family-focused vehicle that’s also available as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
Perhaps you’re looking for an SUV that takes cargo space to the next level, has enough seats for the whole fam (and a few friends), or could save you tons of money on gas while also helping the environment. When you drive the Volvo XC90 you could achieve all of that and more.
The Volvo XC90 seats up to seven, looks chic inside and out, and is one of the safest vehicles on the road—but is it right for you? To give you the rundown on the XC90 and how it compares to the smaller SUVs in Volvo’s lineup is Jerry

along the way! Meet the biggest Volvo SUV: the XC90
This three-row Volvo XC90 has a sleek body style and is the largest of all the Volvos measuring 195 inches in length, 69.9 inches in height, and weighing 4,354 pounds. When you opt for the Recharge T8 XC90—the PHEV version—the curb weight increases from 5,072 and up to 5,082pounds depending on which trim package you choose.
Even with three rows of seats, the XC90 is considered a midsized SUV. You might think this means compromising comfort for third-row passengers, but you'll be pleasantly surprised at how supportive and plush the seats are in every row—even when the legroom in the back borders on tight.
As a luxury vehicle, the XC90 has a luxury starting MSRP of $51,995 for the base T5 Momentum. It’s not exactly a steal, but at least you know you’re getting a beautiful vehicle made with high-quality materials designed with intention.
It’s also one of the only three-row SUVs currently available as a PHEV. Even the gas-powered version of the XC90 is technically a mild hybrid. MSRPs for the XC90 Recharge range from $65,895 to $73,195. While that might seem like a huge investment, you’ll be reaping the benefits of 58 combined mpge and saving quite a few trips to the gas station.
One drawback to the XC90 Recharge is its inability to fast charge with a DC fast charger. It does have a 3.7 kW charger on board, but you’ll need to do the majority of your charging at home which can be inconvenient if you’re on the go.
Either way, the XC90 Recharge holds its own when it comes to engine power. The inline-4 cylinder produces 455 combined horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. A 0 to 60 acceleration time of five seconds is noteworthy for a vehicle of its size.
All-wheel drive (AWD) is a standard feature of the XC90 Recharge regardless of the trim level. The mild hybrid XC90 comes with standard front-wheel drive (FWD).

Engine and performance
As we mentioned earlier, the Volvo XC90 has a few different engine options. Here is a closer look at what those choices include:
Cargo and towing
It’s one thing to be able to transport a lot of passengers, but cargo space and towing capacity are the other essential specs of SUVs. Here’s what kind of cargo volume you’ll be working with for all trims of the Volvo XC90:
Cargo volume behind first row: 65.5 cubic feet
Cargo volume behind second row: 35.6 cubic feet
Cargo volume behind third row: 12.6 cubic feet
The cargo volume when all the seats are in the upright position is understandably disappointing—especially when you compare it to other three-row midsized SUVs.
For insurance, the Chevrolet Traverse
boasts 23 cubic feet of storage behind the third row but has a far less inviting cabin than the XC90. Or there’s theVolkswagen Atlas
that offers 20 cubic feet of cargo space when all the seats are up. As for towing capacity, the XC90 isn’t leading the pack. The FWD T5 Momentum has a 4,000-pound towing capacity while the AWD XC90 models (including the Recharge) can tow up to 5,000 pounds. If you’re in the market for a midsized, three-row SUV that can handle something heavier, you may want to explore the Land Rover Discovery
which has a towing capacity of 6,613 pounds. Volvo XC90 vs. the competition
While the XC90 may be the biggest SUV made by Volvo, how does it hold up to some of the other popular SUVs in its class? The table below breaks down how the XC90 fares against some of its most direct three-row competitors like the Lincoln Aviator
or Acura MDX

RECOMMENDEDThis app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
