How do I remove a co-buyer from my car title?

How can I remove my ex-boyfriend as a co-buyer on my car title? I’ve made pretty much all of the loan payments by myself. Now that we’re breaking up, we’ve agreed that I will get the car, but I’m not sure how to officially remove him.

Breakups are hard, especially when you need to deal with finances. To remove your ex as a co-buyer on your car title, you’ll need permission from your lienholder. If you can, it’s a good idea to pay off your loan before going forward with the process.
Legally speaking, the process of removing your ex’s name from the title will function a lot like a sale, meaning you’ll sign the form on the back of your car title as if your ex is selling the car to you. Here’s how to properly fill out the form:
  • If the conjunction between your names on your title is and, you’ll both need to sign the back of the title as sellers and you’ll sign as a buyer.
  • If the conjunction between your names is or, then your ex will need to sign as a seller on the title, while you’ll sign as a buyer.
  • Some states will allow you to mail in these forms, but you may need to visit the DMV together to complete the transfer.
You can also
refinance your loan
and find a lender who can help you. In this case, you’ll need to take out a new loan without your ex, meaning you’ll need to rely on your income and credit score.
Since you’re updating your car title, you’ll also need to update your car insurance policy. The
