To get
SR-22 insurance
without a car, you will need to buy
non-owner car insurance
from a provider willing to file an SR-22 on your behalf. An SR-22 form is not actually insurance. It simply certifies your financial responsibility, and it must be filed by the insurance provider who also carries your policy. Here’s what you need to know about a non-owner policy:
  • Gives you
    liability coverage
for any vehicle that you drive, no matter who owns it
  • Offers less coverage than a standard policy
  • Is usually less expensive than a standard policy
  • Has no deductible Keep in mind that SR-22 forms are only required for high-risk drivers. Because of your driving record, you can expect your
    non-owner SR-22 policy
to cost more than a standard policy, not less like a typical non-owner policy, plus the additional filing fee for the SR-22 form. Some major insurance companies like GEICO and Progressive offer non-owner policies. But before you buy one, make sure:
  • The company will insure you given your new status as a
    high-risk driver
driver. Your old company can choose not to renew your coverage
  • Your new provider will be able to file an SR-22 on your behalf, as you cannot file an SR-22 for yourself
