That’s great that you’re helping your brother-in-law! Carrying a ladder on a car is actually pretty simple, especially if you already have luggage racks on your roof. Even if you don’t, we can tell you how to carry a ladder on your car with nothing more than a little cushioning and a few tie-downs.
If you don’t have luggage racks on your roof, find something you can use to keep the ladder from coming in contact with your paint job. A couple of cushions, a folded-up blanket, or even a row of pool noodles will do the trick.
Once you’ve got your padding down, lay the ladder on top and secure it in place with rope, bungee cords, or ratchet straps at the front and back of the car. Be sure to attach the tie-downs to the car’s undercarriage so you don’t damage your bumpers.
Now, open your car doors and use a couple of straps or bungee cords to secure the ladder from side to side on your roof. Finally, visibly attach a long red ribbon or cloth to any portion of the ladder that overhangs the length of your car. You’re all ready to head over to your brother-in-law’s!
