If you’re moving out of one of the eleven states where Mercury provides coverage—or you simply found cheaper rates with another company—then you might need to cancel your
car insurance
. But because being uninsured for 30 days or more can result in higher premiums, be sure to get yourself set up with new car insurance before canceling your old policy.

Can you cancel a Mercury policy without calling?

While Mercury doesn’t offer the convenience of online cancellations, you can still cancel your car insurance without talking on the phone. However, if you don’t want to speak to anyone, your only option is to cancel by sending a written letter to Mercury’s headquarters in
Brea, CA
On the other hand, policyholders who don’t want to speak on the phone but don’t mind discussing their cancellation in person can visit a Mercury office and speak with a local agent

Does Mercury charge a cancellation fee?

Yes. When you cancel your Mercury auto insurance, you’ll have to pay 10% of your remaining premium. This means that if you cancel early in your policy period, you could be looking at a fairly expensive cancellation fee. But if you cancel close to your renewal date, you’ll pay very little—and canceling on your renewal date itself means you’ll pay no cancellation fee at all

Does Mercury refund you if you cancel your auto insurance policy?

If you prepaid for your Mercury car insurance, then you’re entitled to a reimbursement. This refund is made up of the unused portion of your premium minus the insurance cancellation fee. According to Mercury, you should receive your refund within two weeks of the day you cancel your policy.

Does Mercury have a grace period for nonpayment?

Yes—like most insurance companies, Mercury will not immediately cancel your policy if you miss a payment. You’ll still have to pay what you owe, of course, but you get a grace period in which to pay your overdue bill based on where you live. To find out the specific grace period for your state, check your policy paperwork
Keep in mind that if you don’t pay your bill by the time your grace period expires, your policy will then be canceled automatically—and you’ll be required to re-enroll before you can get your coverage back.

Should you cancel your Mercury insurance?

There are plenty of reasons why you might consider canceling your Mercury insurance policy, such as:
  • You can’t afford your current insurance rate.
  • You prefer the coverage options offered by another provider.
  • You purchased a new car and it caused your rate to go up.
  • You have violations on your driving record which caused your premium to spike.
  • You
    sold your vehicle
    or got married.
  • You
    moved
to a state where Mercury insurance isn’t offered.
  • Another car insurance company offered you a cheaper insurance premium.
  • You bought renters insurance or homeowners insurance from a different provider, and want to take advantage of their bundling discount.
  • You aren’t happy with the way Mercury handles insurance claims.
These are all valid reasons to start shopping for new car insurance quotes, but they don’t automatically mean you should cancel your policy with the Mercury insurance company. Instead, start comparing new insurance options by gathering quotes and reading insurance reviews.
