“Insurance adjusters have one of the most interesting jobs in the insurance industry! To get started, first think about what type of adjuster you would like to be, such as:
  • Auto adjuster
  • Home adjuster
  • Company adjuster
  • Public adjuster
  • Independent adjuster
No matter the path you choose, all adjuster positions require candidates to have a high school diploma or GED.
Independent and public adjusters have a more flexible schedule and aren’t locked into one particular company. They are either contacted by an insurance company or a policyholder.
They are also known as catastrophe claims adjusters because they are the first boots on the ground after a major disaster. So if you like to travel and don’t mind getting dirty, this could be the job for you!
Once you know if you will work with a specific agency or be self-employed, you may need to complete an insurance licensing exam.
In many cases, big-name insurance companies will pay for your licensing class, license, and license renewals. You should check with your state’s Department of Financial Services to inquire about specific adjuster licensing qualifications.
Keep in mind that it is good to have a background that relates to being an adjuster. Many helpful prior careers are:
  • Contractors
  • Architects
  • Mechanics
  • Home insurance agent
Don’t forget, while you are looking for a career in the insurance industry, make sure your insurance policy is up to date! Having your own business can impact your
auto and home
policies.
