How big is the battery in an electric car?

I’m thinking about buying my first electric car, but I wanted to do some research first. I know the space that would normally be occupied by the engine is replaced by an electric motor, but where is the battery, and how big is it?

First of all, congrats on shopping around for a new
electric car
. It’s a very exciting time to be looking into electric cars, and doing the research is an important part of the car-buying process.
The capacity of electric batteries ranges from about 30kWH up to 100kWh, and the size and weight depends on the battery capacity. The Tesla Model S for example contains an 85 kWh battery pack that weighs 1,200 lbs. The battery pack in a 40 kWh Nissan Leaf on the other hand only weighs about 668 lbs and has the external dimensions of 1547 x 1188 x 264 mm.
