As of 2022, Virginia does require a front license plate for most vehicles, with the exception of smaller vehicles like mopeds, motorcycles, and trailers. If you’re caught without a front license plate, you’ll receive a fine of $87. You can attach your front plate however you’d like, as long as it is secure and legible.

, you’ll have a grace period lasting 30 days after establishing residency to sort out your vehicle registration and titling with the Virginia DMV, after which point you’ll need to add your new plates to your car.
