How many Ford Shelbys were made back in the day?
My dad owns the end-all, be-all collector car: an original 1969 GT350 Ford Shelby Mustang. It’s in mint condition and it’s a real stunner. My kids are madly in love with it. But my daughter asked me a question I don’t have an answer to. How many Ford Shelbys were made back in the day? Do you guys know?

Ford Shelbys
were made, though no one knows how many are still on the road.The phrase “Ford Shelby” can refer to a few different cars, but really, we all think of the Ford Shelby Mustangs like the one your dad has. Only 14,368 Ford Shelby Mustangs were ever built. It’s unknown how many of those Shelby Mustangs still exist today.
But there were also Shelby Cobras, race cars built with Ford engines and British AC Cars’ Bristol bodies. Only 998 Shelby Cobras were built between 1961 and 1968. And let’s not forget the legendary Ford GT40 race car Shelby designed to take on Ferrari at Le Mans. Shelby and Ford only built 105 Ford GT40 racers.
The phrase “Ford Shelby” typically refers to the Shelby Mustangs of the 1960’s. But there were Dodge Shelbys, too, made in the 1980’s with Carroll Shelby’s direct input (6,050 of those were built).
Shelby worked with Ford again in the 2000’s until his death in 2012, releasing next-generation Shelby Mustangs. These cars were impressive—every project Carroll Shelby got involved in was impressive—but they never matched the fabled reputation of those original Ford Shelby Mustangs.
