The Toyota
Yaris does come with an option for a 6-speed manual transmission, but Toyota discontinued production of the Yaris at the end of the 2020 model year. Still, if your son loves driving a stick-shift, and you can find a manual Yaris in good condition, this will be a fun car to drive (though we here at Jerry will give him a stern talking-to if he even thinks about joyriding).
Along with having a light and athletic body, the Yaris has plenty more that makes it a fun ride (don’t tell your son that—tell him it’s a boring little car that gets him from A to B, nothing more). Its 1.5 L 106 horsepower engine is quite spritely, with nimble handling and responsive steering feedback.
In spite of its size, the Yaris is stable and stress-free while driving on the highway, though it has a bit of body roll on tight turns (definitely warn him about this).
The one big drawback—the noise. The Yaris is not a quiet ride, and road and wind noise is a common complaint from owners. The noise likely stems from its lightweight body, but that’s a big reason why the Yaris is so fuel efficient, sporting a combined 35 miles per gallon.
In addition to finding a safe ride for your son, you can get added peace of mind by protecting his manual Yaris with a robust car insurance
