Fire and smoke damage are a few common named perils in renters insurance no matter where you live.
If a fire damages your personal property, you will be eligible for payouts from your insurance provider to replace your belongings. It does not matter how the fire started either—wildfires, kitchen fires, electrical fires, candle mishaps, should be covered unless your policy has a specifically named exclusion.
Your renters policy should also have a section called loss of use or additional living expenses. If your home is damaged by a covered peril making it uninhabitable, this coverage will pay for living expenses like food and a hotel room.
