There are two steps to opening the hood of a Jeep Liberty. First, pull the hood release lever under the dashboard to the left of your steering wheel. Then, pull the secondary hood latch release lever between your grille and hood.
Even if you take your Jeep to the mechanic for every oil change
or car repair,
you’ll probably have to open your own hood sooner or later. If you’ve never needed to, however, you might need some help figuring it out. Luckily, we’re here to cover the basics of opening your Jeep Liberty hood release, including where to find the levers, how to use them, what to do if it doesn’t work, and if your car insurance
will pay for a repair. Now let’s take a gander under that hood. Where is the hood release on a Jeep Liberty?
For most Jeep Liberty models, you’ll find the hood release on the left side of the instrumental panel below your dashboard.
Unless you know exactly what you’re looking for, the hood release lever can be hard to locate since it’s usually found near your knee or feet. The release lever will have a small car icon with its hood popped open on it. Pulling this is the first step in opening your Liberty’s hood.
The second step is to locate the secondary hood release latch, which is on the underside of your Jeep’s hood, between the grille and hood—and it’s typically off-center to the left. This can be hard to see, so it might be easier to feel around inside the hood to find it.
How to open the hood on a Jeep Liberty
Once you find your hood release levers, opening the hood of your Jeep Liberty is easy. Here’s what to do:
Pull the hood release lever from the inside of your Jeep until you hear the hood pop.
Feel around for the release latch under the hood and push it to the right to open the hood.
Find the prop rod under the hood and insert it into the proper notch on the underside of your hood.
With your car hood open and propped, you can get started on that maintenance task you’ve been putting off—as long as your hood levers are working properly, of course.
What if the hood release latch doesn’t work?
If you don’t hear that familiar “pop” when you pull the release lever, you’re probably dealing with a broken hood latch release cable. You aren’t out of luck, though—just grab a flathead screwdriver and a flashlight.
First, look for the hood latch between your grille and the hood. The cable is usually attached to the right side of the release arm. Using the screwdriver, push the release arm over until the latch is released. After this, just prop the hood open as usual and you’re good to go.

If your hood release cable is broken or you need a new Jeep Liberty hood latch
, it’s usually a good idea to have a reliable mechanic do the job. If you don’t have a ton of mechanical experience, this isn’t the job to start learning—because these parts can be tricky to deal with. For this service, you can expect to pay about $175 to $215, and your total cost will depend on where you live and what year your Jeep is. The price will also depend on what kind of repair shop you go to.
For instance, going to a Jeep dealership might cost more because they’ll use original equipment manufacturer (OEM) auto parts—which may not be a problem if you have OEM coverage
on your car insurance policy. If you don’t, going to an independent mechanic may save you a few bucks on your repair. If your hood latch malfunction was the result of a wreck or accident, you might be able to use your collision coverage
policy if you have it. If not, you’ll have to pay for the repair out of pocket. "You must get this app! It’s my first time getting my own insurance, so I called a few companies myself. Their rates priced me around $600/month. I used Jerry
and my rates went down to $250/month. I’m so happy!” —Melissa C.
RECOMMENDEDThis app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
