Does renters insurance cover lost items?

There was recently a burglary at my apartment complex. Moving before my lease is up isn’t an option for me, so I’m trying to get insurance for my own stuff set up as soon as possible. Does renters insurance cover lost or stolen items?

Wow, I’m glad you and your things are still okay. Yes, your renters insurance policy would cover lost or stolen items, as long as the cause of the loss was a named peril.
Common
named perils
include theft, as well as fire or windstorm damage. A standard
renters insurance
policy would typically cover these kinds of losses.
Certain valuables, however, like expensive jewelry, rare movie posters, or sports memorabilia, may need additional coverage, so it’s important to review your policy if this is a concern for you.
It’s also important to clarify that a loss due to a named peril is different from accidentally losing an item. If you were traveling and simply misplaced your laptop, for example, that wouldn’t be covered unless for some reason that was named as a peril in your policy. (This would be pretty rare.)
